Two young religious women engage in a game of cat and mouse in the home of a strange man. The film says: “No Generative Alt was used to make this film. I saw seven films at this year’s TIFF and my vote for best film was HERETIC, with Hugh Grant (who also got my vote.”) for best actor.
This differs from his roles in schizophrenic romantic comedies
I was very impressed with how he dealt with his dark side in the HBO miniseries THE UNDOING, but here he turns it up to 11 as a friendly, religion-obsessed psychopath. Co-stars Sophie Thatcher and Chloe East are also excellent as two Mormon missionaries who think they are visiting someone who wants to convert to Mormonism. Grant, however, is far more educated—and critical—of religion than expected.
The result is refreshingly unconventional
Realizing that he is not really interested in conversion, but in discussing religion, they try to leave, but are trapped. Thus begins a cat-and-mouse game in which Grant tests his faith. For a horror film, the film is solid, but doesn’t reach the extremes of similarly claustrophobic horror films like FUNNY GAMES (the original) and SPEAK NO EVIL (the 2022 version).

My only criticism is that the choice of Mormonism as a religion seems a bit calculated. In short, watch this movie if you’ve ever enjoyed a Hugh Grant movie and want to see him at the height of his career. Ever since I saw Allison Janney in I TONYA in 2017, I haven’t been so sure about a Best Actor Oscar nomination for a TIFF film.
